Horizon scanning – Key topics to watch out for in the UK Construction Industry

What will 2023 bring for construction and engineering?
We look at the key topics and trends to watch out for in the industry over the coming year
2022 was a tough year for the construction industry, with the residual impact of the pandemic and Brexit continuing to affect the labour market and the availability of materials. This in turn was exacerbated by the invasion of the Ukraine in February and compounded by the budgetary actions of the government in the latter part of the year.
Whilst there are some positive signs for the construction industry in the latest output figures (with four months of consecutive growth up to October 2022), it is inevitable given the current economic climate that 2023 will bring a downturn of some sort. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on inflation and the supply and availability of materials. The focus in 2023 is likely to be on what can be done to encourage growth in the industry and how supply chains can work together to ease financial pressures whilst ensuring projects, to the extent possible, are completed on time and within budget.
