  • Ireland
  • General

After four years in the making, the European Parliament voted yesterday to formally approve the final text of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”). The EU Parliament’s official approval of the GDPR follows an announcement on 15 December 2015 that the EU Parliament, Council and Commission representatives had reached political agreement on the drafting of the new EU data protection framework.

The GDPR will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the EU Official Journal. Its provisions will be directly applicable in all member states two years after this date.

Further detail on the GDPR and the key changes to be implemented are available here.
