Helping your career take off

Our legal training contracts can help you start your career in law

Our training contracts offer the perfect route into law. Over a two-year period, we’ll give you the knowledge, tools and opportunities to make a truly successful and rewarding legal career.

Whether you are based in the UK, Middle East or Asia, your training will consist of four seats of six months each. During each seat, you'll have a supervisor who will give you regular feedback. You will also receive formal feedback through an appraisal system that takes place in the middle and at the end of each seat.

This system has been honed over a number of years to ensure that you get the most out of your time with us. Ultimately, we want to help you become the next leader in your field and hope that you’ll be part of the next generation to help drive us forward onto even greater heights.

Legal training contracts in the UK

Our UK legal training contracts give you the opportunity to experience four six-month seats over two years. At least one seat must be in a contentious area. You will also have the chance to apply for a secondment at a client office or at another Eversheds Sutherland office in the UK or internationally.

You won't simply be given a conventional development path: you’ll work closely with your supervisor to identify and build on your strengths - and we'll talk to you about how you see your future evolving. We recommend trying as many seats as possible but if there's one you really want to experience, we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer. As you might expect, our aim is to retain every trainee on qualification.

For those who are interested in part-time training, this is an option within the firm. Please discuss any requests for part-time working with the Emerging Talent team at any point during the recruitment process or at offer stage.

Understanding the SQE and our offering (In England, Wales and Middle East)

The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the new route to qualification as a Solicitor in England and Wales. This replaces the existing route of the LPC and applies to all of our future Trainees regardless of any previous legal qualifications or experience.

We offer Training Contracts two years in advance of the start date. If successful in receiving an offer, you will be required to undertake a fully funded SQE preparation course with The University of Law, to give you the very best support in order to pass the new SQE exams and assessments. You will undertake and pass the SQE preparation course, plus SQE1 and SQE2 in the academic year before joining us as a Trainee, although anyone who has successfully completed the LPC at the point offer would be exempt from sitting SQE1 but would still be required to undertake the full SQE preparation course and successfully pass SQE2.

For those who have not undertaken an undergraduate law degree, Eversheds Sutherland will also fund The Post Graduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) conversion course, to be taken with The University of Law during the academic year before commencing the SQE preparation course.

We offer a small number of two year Traineeships in our Edinburgh office, leading to qualification as a Scottish Solicitor. Eversheds Sutherland will cover the cost of the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice for successful candidates who have not already undertaken it.

Legal training contracts in the Middle East

The Middle East training programme allows you to focus your technical skills in multiple practice groups as you rotate through four six-month seats, predominantly in the Middle East but culminating in qualification in England & Wales.

You’ll also take part in a full programme of personal and commercial development skills training including finance and business, communication, presenting, business writing, client care, professional standards and advocacy. Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer in the Middle East.

Legal training contracts in Hong Kong

Our Hong Kong training contracts consist of four seats of six months each over two years across Litigation, Banking, Corporate and a secondment to one of our overseas offices.

As with all our training contracts, you’ll be fully supported throughout to ensure your career develops in the way you want it to. Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer. Historically, every Hong Kong Eversheds trainee has been offered a permanent position on qualification.
