John is in an international disputes lawyer. Although now based in London, he was previously based in the UAE and a substantial proportion of his practice is focused on managing disputes across the Middle East and Africa. He is also Head of the firm's Africa Group.
His experience in the Middle East and Africa includes:
- advising international companies in defending proceedings with a total value of USD 7 billion in the courts of the UAE, Qatar, Egypt and Iraq;
- advising Kuwaiti investors in relation to a +USD 100m financial services dispute in the DIFC Courts in Dubai;
- advising a Qatar based financial service institution in relation to a +USD 130 million dispute involving proceedings in the English Courts and enforcement proceedings in Luxembourg;
- advising on a +USD 125m dispute in relation to a project in Iraq;
- advising an international hotel group in relation to a USD 20 million dispute in relation to a project in Libya;
- advising an African bank on a USD 10 million dispute involving proceedings in the English Courts and the enforcement on security in East Africa;
- advising a defence contractor in a USD 10 million dispute in the Abu Dhabi Courts;
- advising on the enforcement of judgements and arbitral awards across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
In the UK, his practice has focused primarily on the real sector in which his experience includes:
- advising on the implementation of a vacant possession strategy on the 300 hectare site of the 2012 Olympic Games;
- acting in five judicial review proceedings and statutory challenges relating to the Compulsory Purchase Order affecting the Olympic Site;
- advising on contentious issues arising from a number of high profile developments within the West End of London.
