Practice notes

Chris a partner in our Human Resources Practice Group, specialising in employment advice to our Education sector clients, particularly universities. Chris' work includes complex disputes and tribunal cases, industrial relations issues, TUPE, redundancy and organisational change, senior level terminations, internationalisation, equality and diversity matters and academic freedom issues.

Chris is an experienced employment tribunal advocate, having represented employers at numerous tribunal hearings since qualifying as a solicitor in 1993. His tribunal work typically includes the defence of claims for unfair and wrongful dismissal, but typically also claims involving complaints of discrimination and whistleblowing.

Chris' recent experience also includes advice to universities on pay and severance arrangements for senior level staff, including compliance with regulatory and governance issues and reviewing procedures and practices for dealing with sexual harassment claims; on making bolder and more effective use of the positive action provisions in the Equality Act to reduce pay gaps and increase the representation of women and BAME staff in their workforce; and on more structured approaches to performance management, helping managers to address cases more confidently and consistently.

Chris is the author of the PLC Employment Online practice note on collective redundancies. He is recognised as a leading practitioner in Legal 500 and Chambers and ranked in Legal 500 as the leading individual for Education in Yorkshire. He was named in 2017 as an Acritas Star Lawyer, nominated for his "expertise, experience and efficiency".
