Practice notes

Stephen is a Partner specialising in all aspects of charity law and issues affecting not for profits. He has a particular interest in education and social care charities. He advises charities and not for profits on:

  • governance;
  • mergers and reorganisations;
  • charity law duties; and
  • corporate matters.

He regularly deals with the Charity Commission and has successfully registered a number of charities with the Commission and OSCR, the Scottish Charity Regulator. He also advises third parties, including corporates and pension funds, on their interactions with the charity sector. He has significant experience of advising on the establishment of corporate foundations and on putting in place multi million pound grant agreements.

Stephen’s recent work includes advising a charity on a merger to create a £100 million charity group, applying to the Charity Commission to secure the release of a permanent endowment restriction valued at £35 million for an educational charity and advising a national park on the establishment of a charity. He advised the Alan Turing Institute on its registration with the Charity Commission and the Born Free Foundation on governance matters. He is a member of the Charity Law Association and is a regular speaker on issues affecting charities.
