Ranked by the Legal 500 as the only Accredited Mediator of CEDR, UK working in Saudi Arabia, Anum is a Senior Associate in the Corporate Commercial team in Riyadh. He has 16 years’ experience both as in-house counsel and in private practice. Prior to joining us, Anum was managing a law firm in Lahore where he, in addition to handling corporate/commercial work, actively litigated before state, federal courts and Appeal courts. Anum was also appointed as a National Consultant to the International Trade Centre on various occasions and jointly authored a report published by the ITC, Geneva.

Anum advises on all forms of Technology, Media and Telecommunication (TMT) and commercial arrangements. Anum also advises on wider commercial arrangements including outsourcing, sale of goods and supply of services, contract manufacturing, standard terms and conditions, and ‘routes to market’ arrangements such as franchising, distribution and agency.

Anum advises on  employment contracts, as well as advising on a broad range of international labour law issues. Recent experience includes:  reviewing and commenting on employment handbooks for international and local companies; advising on appointments and exits at all levels, including executive levels;  providing advice on company restructuring and redundancies; liaising on a frequent basis with Ministry of Labour on employment related matters.

Anum’s recent experience has been in the transport and infrastructure sectors as he has been partially seconded to one of the biggest rail companies of the world for the ‘Haramain high-speed rail project’, a 453-kilometres-long high-speed inter-city rail transport system under construction in Saudi Arabia. During the delivery of this strategically important project, Anum has advised on construction and engineering disputes under Saudi law, and has been involved in the settlement of numerous complex disputes and contract negotiation under a wide range of standard forms and bespoke contracts including FIDIC form.

Anum’s recent experience also includes acting as lead commercial advisor to:

  • multiple global search engine providers on content liability, cybercrimes, data protection work in Saudi Arabia;
  • a major pharmaceuticals and household goods producer on its commercial arrangements in Saudi Arabia;
  • a global coffee house chain on the licensing of its trademarks to distributors in Saudi Arabia
  • one of the biggest paint manufacturers of the world on acquisition of a manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia and business restructuring;
  • the largest Internet retailer in the world on post-acquisition issues related to employment, HR and business structuring and integration;
  • a global leader in the business of producing and selling flavors, fragrances, and ingredients for beverages, biscuits, confectionery, dairy products, and savory food applications sector on the business restructuring and current challenges of the existing commercial set up in Saudi Arabia; 
  • the world’s foremost support services and construction companies with gross revenues of £3.6 billion and a workforce of circa 80,000 people worldwide on business restructuring/expansion in Saudi Arabia.

In addition, to the post graduate degree in law from University of Toronto, Anum holds a master’s degree in Economics. Anum has taught corporate law and allied subjects for almost a decade, publishes regularly on legal issues and has spoken at various panel discussions. Anum’s comments have been carried by the ‘Wall Street Journal’, ‘Bloomberg’, ‘The Lawyer’ and ‘The National’.
